What is ScarWork™
ScarWork™ is a gentle conversation that occurs between the practitioners hands and the clients scars/fascial tissue in the body. It is an intervention therapy, of gentle manual palpation that addresses scars and adhesions, significantly affecting change with scarring, due to breast reduction/enhancement/reconstruction, loss/removal of limbs resulting in prosthetics, caesareans, tummy tuck, facelifts, rhinoplasty, knee and hip replacement, cuts, adhesions, etc.
ScarWork can significantly encourage improved texture and color of scarring, as well as release pain and discomfort at the underlying fascial tissue level, regardless of the age of the trauma.
Sharon Wheeler, is the founder of this modality. Her “work with scars,” began in the the early 70’s, years after training and mentoring with Dr. Ida Rolf. Today, researchers at Scarwork.uk, in and around Europe, South America and the United States, continue to study and highlight the benefits of this intervention therapy..
Each client’s experience after receiving ScarWork, will be unique, as each scar(s) is unique. As the practitioner at Hof’ Integration, Katia’s work is intentional and specific to each client and each scar.
What does my practitioner need to know?
What are you goals?
Where are the scar(s) located?
How long ago did client obtain scar?
What caused the scar; surgery, burn, other trauma?
Are there any specific circumstances regarding the scar(s)? Were there complications?
Is there pain or discomfort associated with the scarring?
What Happens Within a Session?
The scar tissue quality and the quantity of change, even after 1 session, is noticeably different.
The work is rarely painful and is meant to be gentle, even for new scars.
Bumps, valleys, zigzags, knots tend to smooth as does the 3-D fascial relationship in the surrounding structure of the scarring.
The intervention begins with surface layers and continues naturally, with more depth, which may also include any visceral involved.
Shifts near the trauma tend to resolve, with nerve impaired numbness dissipating.
How soon can a scar be treated?
Scars may be treated, whether it is a few months old, or 20+ years old. If the scar(s) are recent, (oncology-related, surgeries, preventative, cosmetic, etc.) a release signed by a medical professional and/or physician, must be received in order to proceed with ScarWork.
Typically, around 8 to 15 weeks after surgery, however may be much longer. Please discuss with oncologist/physicians team before booking an appointment with a Scarwork™ therapist. Or set up a phone call with Hof’ Integration to discuss.
Treatment can begin as soon as client has consulted with the surgeon, who has completed post-operative check up and/or has received a signed release. The scar should not be weeping, open, infected or red and inflamed.
Before / After
What are the benefits of ScarWork?
Treatment sessions are individual to each client. The treatment plan is a joint effort between the client and practitioner, designed to address the overall goals.
No situation, scar or client are the same and as such, the treatment plan is individual to each person.
ScarWork therapists work gently to encourage scar(s) to reintegrate and to contribute to the overall balance and well-being of each person.
This unique bodywork can been quite effective and has been instrumental at improving the connection, movement and appearance of scar(s), while freeing up the other parts of the body.
Whether the scarring is quite significant or minorly noticeable, a great number of clients have noted considerable improvement in the appearance, texture, mobility after treatment. It is not unusual to experience an overall sense of wellbeing and overall acceptance of any scars.
Several sessions may be required depending on the extent/depth, age of and the circumstances that led to the scarring.
